About the Job:

The Controller will report to the CFO and COO and will be responsible for managing and overseeing the financial operations and accounting throughout the organization and leading the accounting team for a residential property management company. You will work closely with the CFO and senior management to ensure the financial health of the company and compliance with regulatory requirements. This includes managing financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, accounts payable and receivable, cash management, and tax compliance. The Controller will establish department goals, individual goals for the accounting team, and key team benchmarks.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the monthly-close process, as well as the residential property-level books including the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures specific to the company, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and train staff/property managers on the use of accounting and reporting systems.
  • Manage and mentor the accounting team and evaluate the effectiveness of accounting personnel, systems, and procedures.
  • Oversee the budgeting and cash forecasting process for the Company and property-Level entities including the preparation of cash forecasts and overseeing the division s banking relationships. Coordinate any infusions needed with Property Ownership controllers.
  • Supervise the accounts payable and receivable processed for the Company and the residential property-level books, ensuring timely and accurate payments and collections.
  • Collaborate with the property management team to provide financial analysis and support for decision making.
  • Ensure compliance with property management regulations and laws, including tax compliance and lease agreements.
  • Fund payroll at payroll close, ensuring accurate and timely payments to employees.
  • Process Weekly Check Run (AvidXchange) and manual checks as needed for the company and the various properties.
  • Perform bank reconciliations for the company and property-level bank accounts.
  • Yardi Administrator: managing the onboarding/offboarding process for both properties and users.
  • Manage all Yardi integration for the company and property level entities.
  • Support CPA firm and property ownership clients in the preparation of annual tax returns and audits by providing needed schedules and other information.

  • Technology Skills: The ability to use financial management software and other technology tools effectively.

 

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related fields.
  • 8-10 years of experience in a financial management role, with at least 2 year of property-level accounting experience.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience in the residential multifamily industry.
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, and cash management
  • Proficiency in managing concurrent accounting for the company and across the property portfolio.
  • Advanced written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to interact at all levels of the organization.
  • Familiarity with YARDI, Sage Intacct, Excel

 

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Familiarity with QuickBooks, AvidXchange, Brex, Ramp, Bill, RealPage, MRI, Entrata, AppFolio.

 

Location

  • Hybrid remote/in-office work based in Chicago, IL.
  • Remote work will be considered with periodic travel to Chicago, IL.
